The major city in Gujarat, Ahmedabad is large and bustling. The old city is divided into numerous ‘pols’ with gates marking neighbourhood boundaries, while the narrow streets hide beautifully carved wooden temples, havelis and smaller houses.
Textiles, bazaars and markets
Gujarat is famous for its textiles and Ahmedabad’s bazaars, including its atmospheric Night Market, are fantastic places to buy superior quality cotton, silk and embroidered clothes.
Both the Taj and the highly impressive city fort overlook the river, as do a number of significant tombs and mausoleums from the Mughal period.
The Calico Museum and Gandhi’s Ashram
The Calico Museum (housing one of the finest collections of antique and modern Indian textiles) and Gandhi’s Ashram (from which he started his march for independence) are interesting visits.
